My Gran

My Gran died yestarday. She was in her eighties and not in perfect shape, but well enough for it to come as a bit of a surprise to everyone. To be honest it’s kinda weird to think that she’s gone - like she’ll be back soon. I’m sure it will hit home soon enough.

For some reason, the first thing I thought of when I though of the things I’ll miss about my gran is rice pudding. I’m not sure why since she’s not made it in so many years. Every now and then I’d ask about getting some made again but it never seemed to happen. My gran made absolutely kick-ass rice pudding. And sponge-cakes. Every birthday was marked with a sponge cake from Gran. She made kick-ass sponge-cakes too, you see.

Come to think of it, most of my memories of my Gran involve food in some way - hadn’t noticed that before. Tuesday lunchtimes, I’d go home from school (I lived very close to my school) and Gran would have bacon rolls for us. We got 1 1/2 each. Friday’s were similar, but with sausage rolls instead of bacon, and a swiss roll for afters. Then we got 50p for our piggy bank (Or in my case, a duck) and we’d head back to school.

If I ever happen to get biscuit crumbs on the bed sheets (A rare occurence these days, being the one who usually changes the bed sheets) I’m reminded of staying with my Gran and Grandpa, drinking tea from a teas-made and eating biscuits before breakfast. Y’know… proper Gran’s house stuff.
