And also

People who slow suddenly from thirty to twenty miles per hour when they see a speed camera. Bastards.

No driving

What on earth was I thinking by deciding to drive into work for a week? It wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be, but it wasn’t worth it either.

For some reason getting into work was fine, but driving back home took twice as long. The reasonable conclusion is of course that the Glasgow population is declining rapidly.

Alternatively the fact that three of the days last week involving delays were caused by people slowing down to peer at crash victims on the hard shoulder might have had something to do with it.

The very fact that there were three in one week on the one stretch of road put me off alone.

So it’s back to the train for me. At least this way I get to finish my book, which I was quite enjoying.

Things I hate when driving…

People who don’t indicate, especially at roundabouts. You’re all bastards.

People who drive up your arse as a way of asking you to let them overtake. Your bastards too - I’ll move in when I’m done overtaking myself, thanks.

Taxi drivers. As much as I hate sweeping generalisations, I hate them more.

People who slow down to look at accidents and cause hold-ups stretching for ten miles.

Obviously nervous drivers.

Sunday drivers.

People who overtake on bends on country roads. You’re all going to die.

It’s not worth the strain on your heart, it really isn’t.

Hello M77

This morning I did something I never thought I’d do. I drove in to work.

Due to a freak collision of events I managed to accidentally find out how to get to work by avoiding traffic, and also that it was cheaper to buy a weekly car-park ticket than it is for us to get the train.

So this week is trial-run week and if we manage to drive in to work every day without tears, stress, raised risk of divorce or crashes then it’s goodbye nice comfortable train and book-reading in the name of money-saving.

Oh ok then, I’ll blog

Didn’t blog for a bit. The reasons for this are rather cruel reasons of busyness. Cruel because it’s exactly the kind of busyness that makes for good blogging.

Let’s summarise the past week or so.

What’s happened? Oh yes - the photography class that was supposed to be the last one turned out to be the second-last one. Not only did we go mental trying to put together two complete portfolios in about two days, but we did so a week too early because we’re daft and got dates mixed up. On top of that, there’s a two week allowance after the end of the course to develop anything you may have undeveloped.

The stress is gone - last class tomorrow. And yes, you can see the photos*.

What else? Oh yes - played my first game of poker for real money. I made the fatal mistake of walking away £28 richer at the end of the night and I now believe that I have amazing poker-playing abilities. That moment could have been some kind of downwards turning point in my life, but only time will tell. More poker in two weeks time. The ‘no limit’ rule is being considered.

Tip: Stay sober, and play against drunk people. I believe that is the key. Have a car as an excuse, so you don’t look too unmanly. Just don’t place the keys in the middle of the table.

What else? Oh yes - the flat was due to be sold today, but it turns out that the buyer doesn’t have mortgage funds. She has two weeks to iron out the blip. I hope it’s a blip. I’ve never sued someone before.

These things happen, these things happen. It’s a blip… *sweats*

What else? Oh yes - some more unrevealable good news that will be revealed at a later date. I like this, it’s like a blog plot device.

What else? Oh yes - the company I work for are actively urging people to take unpaid overtime. I say ‘actively urging’ because they would probably contest my use of the word ‘mandatory’. This fact alone has been the largest contributor to the sudden demise in blogging activity at ybiia towers.

I’m sure there was something else, but I’ll remember it later on.

* - If you buy me a slide scanner.

Bah

The final day of the photo course is on Saturday, so we went out to the dog-races last night in a fevered attempt to get all the photos needed for the final submission.

Then today of course I find out that it takes a week for slide film to get developed (Previously the college had developed it for me but there isn’t enough time for that either).

Arse. Again.

Programmer humour

Geek humour is great.

Best code comment in current work: “Reverse the streams” (Now removed, unfortunately)

Best C++ class name ever: ‘CacheRegister’

Most over-ambitious function name: ‘CWorld::~CWorld’ (For non-programmers, this is a world destructor)
