Saturday was the first day of the photography techniques course. No actual photography (Or even touching of cameras) was done. The first hour was consumed by registrations and form-filling. The nice man who takes the course is a professional photographer who is employed by the college just to take that course.
As well as form filling, he took a note from each student of what their first ever bike was. Mine was a metallic blue grifter with rubber mudguards. The mudguards were important because you could kick them against the chunky tyres and make a loud motorbike noise racing around the streets.
I was expecting him to assign us some kind of homework like ‘take a picture of a bike’. He never did. He did assure us that he wasn’t a ‘bike fetishist’ though. Personally I had never even heard of bike fetishists before, so he obviously knows something about bikes that I don’t. I’ll let the reader come to their own conclusions. The information about our first ever bikes remains unexplainedly folded away in a little notebook.
By the end of the course we need to produce a portfolio of twenty-one photographs. I might post them here, I might not. Depends on wether I can scan them in or not. Also on wether they’re completely shite or not. Personally I’m going to go for twenty-one pictures of bikes. I have a feeling he won’t fail me if I do that, and let him keep them.
Next week, the task is to bring in two photographs that we may or may not have taken ourselves that are good or bad. I’m taking in nine, coz my pile of photos that I wish were better is too big to reduce to just two examples.
